Our story

Before there were scriptures,
there were people.

People who loved and worried, celebrated and grieved, looked at the dawn and wondered. What they learned about living, they put into words, and they gave those words to each other.

made with love & a lot of glue sticks
Heard, then given

Passed on, voice to voice.

The oldest of these words have a simple name: “that which is heard.” For most of their long history they were never written down. They travelled the only way they could: from one voice to one listener, teacher to student, generation after generation, kept so carefully that they survived for thousands of years.

What they passed on

It wasn't fear.

It was something gentler: that life is beautiful if you let it in, that we're connected to each other, and that no one walks through this alone.

These words don't ask you to change who you are. They remind us of something easy to forget: we are whole, and the good we're looking for is already here.

They still deserve to be heard: not as doctrine and not as a sales pitch, but the way they were always meant to travel, offered freely from one person to another.

  • sweetness in the wind & the rivers
  • hearts woven together, however far
  • a hundred autumns, and joy in every one
  • peace in the sky & in all flowing waters
So we began passing them on

Each Saffron & Sage card carries one of these old thoughts, rewritten for today, with its source beneath so you can trace it home. You don't have to believe anything to receive it. You don't have to belong to anything to give it.

Someone heard a thought worth keeping, a very long time ago. They passed it on.

Now it's your turn.

What we believe

The small print, written large.

1

Beauty is everywhere

In a patchwork bird, a cupcake with a cherry on top, a single well-chosen sentence. You only have to let it in.

2

No conditions attached

A blessing is a gift, not a membership. You don't have to believe or belong to anything to receive a kind word, or to give one.

3

Small things, deep talks

A card on the mantel, a tiny story at bedtime, a notepad on the kitchen table. Little things start big conversations.

Our books

A small library, one story at a time.

Every idea gets its own little book: a short, illustrated story written for today, inspired by the same ancient words as its card. Our first is Over, Under, Pull Tight, a story about staying connected. Over the year, the shelf fills with one new story for every idea.

Each story says Inspired by and the passage behind it. Curious? Look it up here.

Who we are

A guild, not a face.

Saffron & Sage is made by a small guild of illustrators, writers and readers of very old books. We'd rather the work do the talking.

Every line is inspired by a different traditional art form from somewhere in the world, beginning with Gond art. Meet the craft.

And the name? Honestly, we just loved how it sounded.

Saffron for warmth, sage for wisdom. It fit. ♡

The Letterbox

Little letters, occasionally.

New cards, first looks and the odd kind word. Never more than we'd want to receive ourselves.
